Understanding Paneled Wallpaper
Paneled wallpaper is supplied differently from traditional wallpaper rolls. Instead of receiving one continuous roll that is cut into strips on site, the wallcovering is ordered in individual panels of predetermined lengths. Manufacturers such as Spoonflower offer this format in several panel lengths, allowing the material to be ordered according to the height and requirements of the room.
That makes accurate measuring especially important. Ceiling height, pattern repeat, wall dimensions, doors, windows and other architectural features all need to be considered before determining the appropriate panel length and quantity. Ordering panels that are too short creates an obvious problem, but ordering significantly more material than the project requires can add unnecessary expense.
Paneled wallpaper also changes the way an experienced paperhanger approaches the installation. Because the material arrives already cut to length, there is less flexibility to compensate for measurement or layout mistakes once the project begins. The room needs to be understood and the installation planned before the wallcovering is ordered, not after it arrives.

With grasscloth and natural wallcoverings, layout isn't simply about where to begin hanging. Because seams and natural variations are part of the finished appearance, the placement of each panel affects the way the entire room feels.
Before installation begins, I look at the room as a whole—focal walls, entrances, windows, doors, corners, cabinetry and other architectural details. The goal is to create balance, avoid awkward panel placement and make thoughtful decisions about where seams and transitions will be most visually successful.
This becomes especially important with materials that show natural shading from panel to panel. Sometimes the right approach is symmetry. Sometimes it's controlling where a particular panel lands. And sometimes the character of the material itself dictates the best layout. There isn't one formula that works for every wallcovering or every room.
Good layout shouldn't call attention to itself. It should make the finished room feel right.
